Hello, Ujiie here.
The DX7 II.
I've brought it here today for this demo
in track making.
We'll make a track using just the DX7 II.
So let's get started.
But first, because this is a DX7 II,
I want to go with sounds that are very "DX7" in nature.
I've selected a bunch of sounds to use.
Because the DX7 was super popular during
the 1980s, especially during the mid/late 80s,
I thought I'd aim for something that sounds like that era.
I've prepared a "drum machine" sounding rhythm track already.
I'll just play along with it and record like that.
This!
Sounds like a drum machine from that era, right?
Good, don't you think?
This is good. Great even!
Let's go with that.
So the first track I'll record here...
how about bass?
Mention DX7 and bass, and THIS is the sound.
THIS!
VERY good!
Ok, let's record a bass track.
That's good, isn't it?
Playback!
That's tight! Very nice!
Now, on top of this...
Right, there's no way out of it,
it's a DX after all. Electric piano!
Now for this track, let's add some effects to the mix.
I think I'll go with
a bit of chorus and reverb.
Yeah, this!
Ok, electric piano, let's go!
Cooooooool!
Right, playback!
Just adding that electric piano, and
now the track really has DX!!! written all over it.
Ok, next, let's put something on top of those chords.
Maybe a brass sound.
Now, the brass sounds on this,
are NOT like the brass sounds from an analog synth.
Rather, they're very "DX" in nature.
Like this.
Sounds like a mallet at the start of the sound.
THIS! This is really good.
Here we go.
A track of DX mallet brass. Let's go!
Yeah, awesome, I mean...
How can I say it?
How well did that blend in with the rest of the track?
This is really fantastic.
NEXT!
This next sound too, just reeks of "DX"
so I want to use it.
A mallet kind of sound.
This one! This one!
A very "DX" sound.
Let's go with that.
Ok so mallet brass, uh, no, mallet sound.
Let's record.
This is it! Very nice, don't you think?
Playback.
Now, just by adding that kind of percussive sound,
the track got very rhythmical.
Good, good, good, good!
Ok next.
A sound that really improved with the DX7 II: Strings!
It's got more body to it, and it's more realistic.
Quite an improvement.
I want to use the higher register with these strings.
Good for rounding out the highs.
Let's turn it down a bit first.
Let's go.
Good!
And let's play it back.
Yeah that's really good.
So what have we got here? Started with drums,
then a bass track, then electric piano,
then mallet brass and the other mallet, like a marimba,
and lastly, those strings.
Got a real late 80s kind of vibe going on.
Well, what do you think?
I hope you enjoyed this.
Track making with the DX7 II.
Just what you'd expect from a DX.
It really showed its colors here.
The sound of the late 80s!
But it doesn't sound out of place even now.
And that's it for track making with the DX7 II!
